VIRTUALIZATION

Red Hat Virtualization

Red Hat® Virtualization is an open, software-defined platform that virtualizes Linux and Microsoft Windows workloads. Built on Red Hat Enterprise Linux® and the Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM), it features management tools that virtualize resources, processes, and applications—giving you a stable foundation for a cloud-native and containerized future.

VMware

VMware is a virtualization and cloud computing software provider. It is a subsidiary of Dell Technologies. EMC Corporation originally acquired VMware in 2004; EMC was later acquired by Dell Technologies in 2016. VMware bases its virtualization technologies on its bare-metal hypervisor ESX/ESXi in x86 architecture. With VMware server virtualization, a hypervisor is installed on the physical server to allow for multiple virtual machines (VMs) to run on the same physical server.

VMs vs. Containers

Many Red Hat customers who are working with containers are deploying them on virtual machines. This is especially true of those who already have an established virtualization infrastructure.  Without a doubt, containers and hypervisors each have their own respective pros and cons and choosing when to use which depends heavily on the applications and workloads you’re seeking to deploy. However, at the end of the day, virtualization and containerization are, in fact, complementary technologies.  In effect, it's likely not a question of "which to use when" but one of "how might I best leverage both".
